Knitting - plain and simple...

"Knitting... construction of a fabric made of interlocking loops of yarn by means of needles."

It is a simple definition to a means of self expression.

This is without a doubt one of the few crafts that allows you to create a totally unique "fabric" with the use of 2 needles and yarn.

At Hobbie's House, our primary focus to date has been to provide custom made knitwear for wizards of all ages - wizards who do not knit...and a few who do!

We remain purveyors of quality knits for wizard school uniforms. However, many wizards, in the process of assembling a complete uniform, wrote to us and expressed a definite interest in knitting their own sweaters.

We now have a growing collection of patterns for wizard school vests, sweaters and cardigans.

Do not see the size you need? Be sure to let us know and we will add it to the collection. Most school uniform sweaters are plain in style and color.

The Wizard School sweater is no exception. It is stockinet stitch with a narrow trim in House colors.

The sweater's V-neckline is somewhat higher than the standard depth for this type of neckline. It also features a set-in sleeve which is normally a little tricky to fit correctly - it requires several accurate measurements: the back shoulder width, the armhole and the sleeve length.

As with many other needle crafts, knitting highlights the creativity of the knitter and is totally subjective.

As a result, every wizard fan has their own interpretation of the details which make these knits authentic reproductions, especially when it comes to sweater style and colors.

Since every costuming enthusiast enjoys a different level of knitting proficiency, we will not presume to teach you how to knit.

Hobbie's wizard wear knitting patterns are purposely simple enough for the new and beginning knitter, albeit written assuming that you have:

  • The basic tools for knitting such as a tape measure, a friend or family member to help you take accurate measurements, knitting needles, stitch holders, blunt end sewing needles, a crochet hook, etc.
  • A basic knowledge of knitting techniques such as casting on, casting off, increasing and decreasings stitches and other related techniques.
  • Perhaps the most important tip we can share with you is the importance of knitting a test swatch and achieving the correct stitch and row gauge - regardless of the recommended size knitting needles.

This is not terribly important when you are knitting items such as scarves. However, a fraction of an inch multiplied over 20 or so total inches can result in a sweater small enough to fit a House Elf or large enough for two of you.

This is especially true if you are a new knitter, anxious to get started on your first project which happens to be a major component of your wizard costume.

To achieve the fit and size written up in the instructions of any knitting pattern you must match the stitch and row gauge as noted in the directions.

Remember that someone else knit the sample sweater and wrote the knitting instructions. So...take the time to knit the swatch, once, twice, three times if needed [buy an extra skein of your sweater yarn for this purpose]; use whichever size knitting needle you need to achieve the stitch and row gauge.

It is much quicker to unravel what amounts to a 4 by 4 inch square than find you've just spent a week knitting a sweater you cannot possibly wear.

Knitting a sweater takes time so do plan ahead. It is definitely not an overnight project. Your budget will dictate which materials you use. You must also determine whether the sweater you knit falls into one of two categories:

  • A quickly made, costume prop
  • A sweater worn on more than one occasion.
  • The way we look at it...if you are going to spend the time, and money, to knit a sweater, it would be a shame to wear it only at Halloween or Cosplay events.

The wizard sweater is a classic style which can easily be added to your wardrobe to wear with jeans, slacks or a simple skirt.

    Sweater Styles

Wizard School students wear a sweater as part of a traditional school uniform. Cardigans and ribbed sports sweaters are also worn during other school activities...

In fact, the movies show a virtual wardrobe of traditional style knitwear: from the classic, full fashioned uniform sweaters, to ribbed turtlenecks, fairisle and cabled crew necks, tweedy roll neck sweaters with duplicate stitch embellishment, hats, gloves, more cables and bobbles...

The V-neck pullover sweater is part of the traditional school uniform. Knit in stockinet stitch, the pullover sweater has ribbed bands at cuff and the bottom of the sweater body. The neckband is also stockinet stitch.

The oversized cardigan sweater is also part of a typical school uniform. The ribbed sports sweaters are designed specifically for wizarding games.

The "Inital Sweater" was to be our first pattern. However, the demand for a School Vest has outweighed the demand for the Initial Sweater.

A pattern is now avialable for this style as well. We find it to be a sweater style which can easily be dressed up or down depending on the yarn you choose.

A customer favorite for years [in our main custom knitting business], we've knit this versatile style in fabulous mohair, in worsted weight wool and a whole array of other yarns for completely different looks each and every time.

Years ago, our yarn of choice was SheepsWool by Brunswick Yarns. Unfortunately, this yarn has been discontinued. We now use a variety of worsted weight yarns...among them Brown Sheep Nature Spun and Lamb's Pride as well as Plymouth Encore and Galway.

The patterns are drafted for several gauges[and offered in a range of sizes] but if you ever come across a "must have" yarn you would like to use for your sweater, knit up a swatch, give the stitch and row gauge and we will draft the pattern according to your stitch and row gauge.
