Hobbie's House and How We Built It
Custom Knitting In a Virtual World
Have you ever wondered about Hobbie's House and how we built it?
Hobbie’s House of Wizard Wear opened its doors for business 5 years ago when the owner's son, an avid reader of the J.K. Rowling books, requested a custom-made sweater and scarf set - in black and yellow - to complete a Cosplay costume for Katsucon, a local Anime convention.
He posted a photo of the scarf on the web and within days, several friends placed orders for scarves, all for the same event. Soon thereafter, we received a request to supply a vendor at the convention with "as many wizard scarves" as we could possibly supply on short notice.
In short, that is how Hobbie’s House of Wizard Wear came to be but we are actually a spin off a long-standing local custom-knitting business.
How We Built It...
In 2002, we decided to take our local custom knitting business with local clients and go "online".
It was a daunting task, given the very nature of a custom service, especially after decades of conducting this one-on-one business in the old-fashioned way.
However, it was not our first online venture. Since 1998, we have been successfully associated in Ken Evoy and Site Sell.
So we thought...why build just another website [as we had in the past], when we could build a business?
Our preliminary research quickly eliminated one web hosting service after another.
Site Built It was the only complete web hosting/marketing system, which fit our established business. It allowed us to focus on custom knitting while the system assumed the time consuming task of maintaining a web presence.
Site Build It is, in fact, a perfect solution for aspiring entrepreneurs interested in establishing a successful home-based business. Many local businesses, envious of our success online, marveled at the incredible variety of marketing tools available to us, which made it possible Hobbie’s House to succeed on the Internet in a relatively short period, remain a viable business success, and more importantly, continue to grow – in a niche market!
After 5 years, Hobbie’s House of Wizard Wear continues to grow steadily with each passing year...and since then, we have helped several other local businesses launch their own successful Internet business ventures.
Imagine the possibilities:
A retired human resource executive took his consultancy online.
A young mother with a high-stress, full time career started a home based craft business, literally as a stress-relieving outlet.
An empty nester now promotes a catering service and her 10 year old, Baltimore farmer’s market “business” online.
A local repair person now advertises the various services he provides through his new virtual storefront and provides newcomers with reviews of other local services.
Another retiree opened a gourmet cheese and gift shop.
What is your business? Rest assured, you could take it online - and make it work! We all did, thanks to SBI.
